Glass for my LR-308B...Suggestions?
« on: February 01, 2012, 01:11:31 PM »

Hey All,

New to the group and new to .308's.  Ordered a LR-308B this week and wanted to get some thoughts on good glass for it.  I hope to use this rifle to hunt hogs and spend time at the range as well.  I assume that I will need glass for both applications but maybe not...hoping to get some "expert" advise from the group.  I need to be some what budget conscience, but I don't want to buy junk either.  So what do y'all think?  Thanks in advance.

Welcome . I'm no expert on scopes & you will get a lot of answers on this question . Its kinda a loaded one .

I would recommend you get a round about figure you want to spend on one & that would help with some suggestions  from us .

Thanks Survival.  I did some research last night on glass and realized just how open ended my post was.  I'll be the first to admit that I'm a rookie (not that that was difficult to figure out) so any advise is greatly appreciated.  I think I want to find a good scope that I can take to the range and shoot at 100, 200, 300 max.  As it relates to price I need to stay under 500 and would love to get in for around 350 to 400.  Midway has a sale on this model: Nikon Buckmasters Rifle Scope 6-18x 40mm Side Focus Mil-Dot Reticle Matte.  It is currently priced at 350 and the reviews are very good.  Anyone have thoughts on this?  Need to get something on the rifle so I can start shooting and gaining some knowledge.

I have 3 Buckmasters .. 2 of that same scope..one BDC reticle( on AR15 varmint), other a target dot.( on. 220 Swift)..think they're an excellent mid level scope...$350 seems bit high.check around..paid less than $300 for ones I have. They were purchased at local shops...try Natchez or Optics Planet

I don't know where you plan to shoot oinker's but where I shoot that is waaaay too much scope for hunting.

I'm shy about scopes for hunting. I have one on a 308 bolt gun, and I use it a lot, but only when I'm expecting to take that long shot. Most pig hunts I still use an open sight lever gun.

For hunting purposes I would recommend a 1-4x, 2-7x, or 3-9x... And that really depends on how much range time you expect to be doing. My .308 bolt rifle has a 3-9x on it, because I use it in CO for 150+ yard shots. Except for one hunt in CO, all my shots with that rifle have been done at 3x or 4x. I regularly shoot it at ranges out to 300 with no issues. I truly believe you only need 3x per 100 yards. That would make your 6-18x scope ideal from 100-600 yards, but really difficult for shots closer than that.

As for my personal .308AR, I am shopping for the IOR Valdada "Spartan" 2-12x36. It is on the more expensive side of scopes, but I wanted a scope I could shoot from 50-300 yards with. I was going to get the NF 2-10x, but I like what the Valdada offers more.

Thanks guys.  I realize that this particular scope would probably not be suited for hog hunting; I was really looking at it for the range and honing my shooting skills.  Sounds like it might be a good place to start for that useage.  I will certainly shop around and try to find the best deal but I think I might be onto something (again at least to get me started).  Thanks again; I really appreciate the feedback.  I've got a lot to learn but can't wait for the education to begin.

I agree ....1-4,2-7 or 3-10 is much better for close to mid range hunting...that's what's on my deer rifles,shotguns..have the high power scopes on varmint rigs and paper punchers....try shooting. Punxsatawney Phil's cousin at 10 yards on 6x...easier to site down the side of barrel.....do have a 4.5-14 Buckmaster on a 7mm ultra mag and even that is a bit much for deer
