It seems legit. It made an appearance on several news feeds.

Cool.

That particular news feed isn't the most reliable so I was not 100% sure it was legit.

Am I correct in that the gun pictured is not the new AK-12 described in the article? I don't see any of the picatinny rails that are mentioned. It looks like an AKSU-74 SBR.  I thought that the Nikonov AN-94 was the new current issue carbine?

This sounds like the rifle mentioned in a little note in "Gun Digest,"  dated for Jan,  2012.  (Do not remember the exact date.)  The notation said that the Russians regard all the hype about this "new" rifle as being just hype;  everything about this rifle is just putting a new collection of existing tech together.  The impression is that the Russian Army wants something really new and much better than the AK design.

As stated, the rifle looks very similar to the AK that we're all familiar with.  The AN-94 on the other hand, IS a new operating system, although I'm not sure how good it is. I've seen in video's that the 94's barrel actually cycles back and forth when it fires, Not sure how conducive that would be to accuracy in a small shoulder fired weapon?

The village idiots won't need all them there new fangled Picatinny rails , but its nice to see the German STG 44 of WWII, come into the twentieth century .

I was under the impression that Russia canned the Kalashnikov all together.
