Looking for first .308 AR...
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:45:07 PM »

Hello Everyone!

New member, first post.  I'm looking to buy a .308 AR and have my sights set on two models:

Mk3 18" Stainless Steel .308 Rifle
http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/Mk3-18-Stainless-Steel-308-Rifle-1807

OR

Bushmaster® MOE 308 Mid-Length
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_60/products_id/77836/Bushmaster+XM10+3F+MOE+Mid-Length+Carbine+308+Win+20%2B1

Both are attractive and have features that I like.  I can buy either rifle for just about $1,200 OTD, which is my budget.  I'm leaning toward the Bushmaster.  I'm open to comments and suggestions.  Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Johann

Welcome from the midwest brother Johann there are lots of selections to be had,got a RRA standard operator runs like a watch eats Federal,Remington,Dag [german surplus],Belgium surplus didn't miss a beat. There are proprietary parts on barrel uses FN FAL mags.Doesn't mix and match as well as other makes, but pull trigger goes bang everytime.$1350.00 w/options from Pete the AR wizard @ legal transfers.com.But the wait was 4 mos. You'll have fun here.

I just ordered my first 308 AR. Spent lots of time reading post on this site and others. While I built all of my AR15's, I ended up ordering a RRA LAR-8 Standard Operator. Maybe I will build one in the future, but from my research it is very hard to build anything better for the same money as the RRA. Sure hurt throwing that much cash down all at once though!!

Thanks everyone.  I've decided to build my own rifle.  Pics and info to follow.  I was about the buy a complete rifle when I did a little more research.  I can build a rifle to my specifications for slightly more than a stock complete rifle. All parts and tools are inbound.

Plus, I've built 2 AR-15s in the past.  I have also converted 2 Saigas (7.62x39 and .308).  Although I no longer own any of those rifles, one thing is clear: I enjoy building/converting rifles.

Cheers,

Johann

Welcome Johann,
Sounds like your building your gun for the right reason, (because the actual building gives you pleasure). If you've done the PG conversions on Saiga rifles, and have built a couple of AR-15's, a .308 AR build will give you no trouble, besides allowing you to spec it out exactly the way your desire/finances dictate. The one thing I will caution you on, (which you probably already know) is that, unlike the AR-15, there is no mil spec for the .308 AR, so I hope you've done your research regarding parts compatibility. The DPMS and Armalite patterns don't completely interchange. Hopefully you've ordered all compatible components. It's always a PITA to have to send back and reorder when you didn't get the right parts to begin with. By the way what receiver set have you chosen?

Jgun,

I'm going with DPMS.  The entire rife is DPMS parts with the exception of the buttstock, grip, and sights.

Johann
