BROWNELLS BRN-10 RETRO RIFLE AR-10

For the first time in Brownells history, the company is manufacturing complete guns of its own in addition to selling tools, components and firearms made by other companies. It should come as no surprise that the new rifle line-up is composed of AR-15s and AR-10s considering the company’s long standing relationship with these platforms. However, the Brownells choice to offer carefully researched “retro” reproductions of historically significant models is certainly a refreshing one for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Brownells BRN-10 AR-10

The first four Retro AR-15s are chambered for .223 Rem./5.56 NATO. The BRN-16A1 is a semi-automatic version of the iconic M16A1 first fielded in the 1960s with matte gray anodized receivers, properly contoured black polymer furniture and a lightweight 20” M16A1 chrome-lined barrel. The BRN-601 is based on the original USAF contract rifle with green furniture, a slabside lower receiver and a triangular 601 charging handle. The XBRN16E1 reflects the transitional rifle in between 601 and M16A1, with features of both. The XBRN-177E2 is an authentic reproduction of an early Special Forces carbine featuring a period-correct flash hider with grenade ring, a full-fence M16A1 lower receiver and a collapsible stock.

The two variants of the BRN-10 rifle, based on the AR-10, are chambered in .308 Win./7.62 NATO. These models have the “trigger style” charging handle located on the top of the receiver inside the carry handle along with the same lines and contours as the first production AR-10s from the 1950s. With receiver sets designed in conjunction with FM-Products, these rifles are compatible with standard DPMS/SR25 components including triggers, magazines, barrels, bolt carrier groups and furniture sets. The BRN-10A (shown) has the same brown furniture found on early rifles, like the models issued by the Netherlands, while the BRN-10B is based on later models adopted by Cuba and other nations.

Brownells is taking pre-orders for Retro rifles now with shipping dates slated for the Spring of 2018.

Brownells BRN-10 AR-10

A Piece of History, Fresh from the Factory & Ready To Shoot

The BRN-10™ by Brownells is a recreation of Eugene Stoner’s original lightweight .308 caliber battle rifle that revolutionized rifle design forever. For the first time, it is possible for the shooter of average means to own – and shoot – a meticulously detailed, factory-new, semi-auto replica at a fraction of a scarce original’s price. The BRN-10™ accurately replicates the original .308 AR in great detail – and it’s built to modern standards using the latest manufacturing technology.

21st Century Technology Meets Historical Detail. Designed in partnership with FM Products, our BRN-10™ receivers are fully machined, not forged, from 7075 T6 aluminum billet. The distinctive lines of late Armalite® AR-10® rifles are carefully reproduced, including the slab-sided lower with straight magazine well. Takedown pins, selector lever, magazine release, and bolt release all have crisp horizontal serrations that match the original rifles.

Clean, Uncluttered, Still “Futuristic”. The absence of a forward assist and shell deflector makes the BRN-10™ upper unusually uncluttered. Up top is the original “trigger”-style charging handle prominently located under the carry handle and positioned for rapid, easy operation – a practical benefit somewhat lost with the later charging handle location.

The BRN-10’s rear sight is fully enclosed by the carry handle, like the original. A simple, A2-style horizontal thumbwheel lets you adjust elevation, while windage is changed by loosening a setscrew and drifting the rear peep. A small window in the rear of the carry handle lets you see the current elevation setting.

Detail Under the Hood. Inside the BRN-10™, the carrier has the distinctive flats and two stabilizing flanges at the rear found on early carriers, and the entire bolt/carrier group is chrome-plated. The bolt itself is machined from 9310 carbon steel and magnetic particle inspected (MPI) to make sure there are no microscopic flaws that could cause premature failure – a benefit the original guns did not have.

The BRN-10’s 20″ barrel, chambered in .308 Winchester, is made for Brownells by Faxon. It first gets a QPQ Nitride finish for excellent resistance to surface wear. After nitriding, the barrel gets top coat that replicates the look of the classic manganese phosphate finish found on the 1950s rifles.

The handguard drops in like a standard AR-15 handguard, but its external contours replicate the original AR-10® ’guard. Buttstock and pistol grip are from the Brownells Retro line; the buttstock is a Type D stock, without a trap door.

Choose Your Model. The Brownells BRN-10™ rifle is available in two models. The BRN-10A leans heavily on the earliest rifles, with an open 3-prong Dutch-style flash hider, functional heavy fluting on the barrel under the handguard, and brown furniture that mimics the look of the original fiberglass. The BRN-10B is inspired by later export rifles and has a closed-prong, Portuguese-type flash hider, later-style black furniture, and a lightweight barrel that makes for a surprisingly quick-handling .308 rifle.

Up-to-Date & Compatible. Brownells BRN-10™ rifles accept standard metal DPMS/SR-25 magazines. They are NOT compatible with Magpul PMAGs due to lower receiver contour. A majority of the components on the BRN-10™ are compatible with modern DPMS/SR-25 parts or AR-15 parts. See Compatibility Notes below.

Armalite the Only AR-10

BUILD AN AR 10

So you decided you want to build an AR-10 and your internet search delivered you to this site 308AR.com and that’s a great start. The problem is years of misinformation from word of mouth, published media and now the internet has steered many shooters down the wrong path in both purchasing rifles and building their own from parts bought online. To clear this up and educate visitors we will start with a brief little historical information and some misconceptions.

ARMALITE is the ONLY AR-10 Rifle

The AR-10 is a trademarked model designation of a rifle model from ARMALITE. No other large frame AR in .308 should be referred to as an AR-10. This is the reason I started referring to other branded weapons as 308 AR Rifles (AR308).

Inevitably I get email and negative comments on the subject but here’s why I stick to my guns in using proper naming. That reason is compatibility. These large AR rifles do not share the same interchangeability as their AR-15 counterparts and that is very important. I like to use analogies when this subject comes up. All muscle cars are not Mustangs, all bolt action rifles are not model 700’s and all Cola’s are not Coke. ARMALITE is the ONLY AR-10. If you want to build an AR-10 head over to Armalite and order an authentic AR-10 UPPER RECEIVER/AR-10 LOWER RECEIVER. I promise you it is the only lower receiver stamped AR-10.

There is no MIL-SPEC AR-10 or 308AR Rifle

There is no Mil-Spec AR-10 or 308AR. Any marketing material stating otherwise is misleading. What can be made Mil-Spec is materials and finishes. Dimensionally there is no MIL-SPEC with regards to parts. The interchangeability and that’s where the confusion of the platform comes in to play. The 308AR platform is full of inconsistency and a lack of interoperability.

Armalite itself has two different styles of AR-10, DPMS has multiple receiver heights on their LR-308 rifles, the DPMS SASS has a proprietary barrel and gas system. Then there’s the DPMS G2 which is an entirely new platform all together. Rock River Arms, POF , all more different than the rest. Once again if you want to build an AR-10 visit Armalite.

If you want to build a 308AR and have some flexibility look towards companies like Aero Precision and Mega Arms as solid bases to begin a 308AR build. Their hardware is first rate and very generic in the way you want it. Of course there is other equally suitable brands but you need to do your homework in advance.

The AR-15 was derived from the Armalite AR-10

There is a misconception that the AR-10 is based on the AR-15. This is completely false. First off AR in AR-10 and AR-15 stands for “ARMALITE RIFLE” and not assault rifle. The AR-10 was developed by Eugene Stoner in 1956. The AR-10 was re-scaled one year later and became the AR-15.

DO YOU STILL WANT TO BUILD AN AR-10?

DO YOU STILL WANT TO BUILD AN AR-10 or would you prefer to build a 308AR? If you still want to build an AR-10 I suggest buying a complete rifle directly from the Armalite. Building an Armalite AR-10 from parts will be a costly endeavor with no benefit over purchasing a rifle from Armalite. If you now realize and understand you want to build a 308AR by all means browse the pages of this website and have at it. The experience is quite rewarding.

308 AR Parts Compatibility

The large platform AR rifles are a great source of confusion and mystery for folks looking to get into the .308 AR world. The number one question being are the parts from a standard AR15 compatible with the Armalite AR10 and DPMS LR-308? Well if only it was a simple yes or no question. The fact of the matter is the LR-308 and AR10 aren’t even completely interchangeable. Hopefully in the paragraphs that follow we can sort all of this out.

Update: As we head in to 2014 there are simply too many brands and variations to list on this page. While i will use it for the most basic of questions I suggest visiting the forum for up to date information.

AR10 vs 308 AR LR-308 Manufacturers

Before we dive into the compatibility its important that you determine the platform your rifles lower receiver is based upon. Below I will group the big names you will come across when looking for parts. It will by no means be a complete list

Click for Massive Updated List of AR308 and AR-10 Manufacturers

Armalite AR10

  • Armalite
  • Eagle Arms
  • Noveske N6
  • Aero Precision
  • Aircraft Armament
  • Iron Ridge Arms (DPMS also)
  • CMMG (DPMS also)

DPMS LR-308

  • Too many to list

.308 AR Pattern Compatibility Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can a Rock River Arms LAR-08 .308 Upper be used with a DPMS LR-308 Lower – No, the upper is longer than a DPMS unit. View image below

    LAR-308 vs LR-308

    LAR-308 vs LR-308

  • Is an Armalite barrel and barrel extension compatible with a DPMS LR-308 Upper Receiver? – Yes, Dimensionally the measurement from the back of the lugs to the breach face is within .001″-.002″ on the Armalite and DPMS bolts. Note: You must use a properly headspaced bolt that matches the barrel extension type. This means you need to use an Armalite Bolt in an Armalite Barrel Extension and likewise for DPMS.
  • Can a Rock River Arms RRA two stage trigger be used with a DPMS LR-308? – Yes, but some times the hammer needs to have some minor filing or stoning to prevent it from dragging on the bolt carrier while cocked.
  • Magpul MIAD pistol grip doesn’t properly hold the rear takedown pin – Magpul addresses this with an adapter called MIAD AR-10/SR-25 Grip Wedge.

LR-308 vs AR-10

For the most part I will point out what’s incompatible rather then list every part.

  • Upper Receivers – This is the most significant difference. They are not compatible for the most part. There are cases of folks modifying them to work together but the results are unacceptable and unsightly in my opinion. Click on the images below to view them full size. Can I Mix DPMS and Armalite Upper and Lower Receivers

While you can make it work the contours and profiles are completely different. I’m going to call this a NO

Can I Shoot .308 Winchester Ammunition 7.62×51 Chamber

NO. Note: Others will disagree

The cartridges are slightly dimensionally different and do not headspace the same. The .308 Winchester Cartridge operates at considerably higher pressures than the 7.62.51 NATO. The two should not be used interchangeably. My rule of thumb is to shoot the caliber stamped on the barrel. If you are not sure what your weapon shoots consult the original manufacturer.

Can I Use a .308 AR or AR-10 Upper Receiver on an AR-15

NO, The lower receiver is not large enough to accommodate the .308 Winchester/7.62×51 Cartridge
