BUILD an ARMALITE AR-10
BUILD an ARMALITE AR-10 -We spend a lot of time on 308ar.com and it’s forum discussing various 308 AR builds from parts. For some reason the Armalite AR-10 does not seem to get the same attention. It seems most folks are just buying complete AR-10’s from the factory. I decided it was time for a change, we needed to have a true AR-10 project for this site. It also seems fitting for this site to have a tribute to the creators of the one and only true AR-10, Armalite.
As fate would have it and you may have noticed we recently picked up Armalite as an advertiser. With the above factors in mind I have spent a fair amount of time going through the Armalite website product by product. I was quite surprised at the completeness of their online catalog. A shooter could easily assemble an order for an AR-10 in just a few clicks without the need to go elsewhere.
The list below is that of a theoretical build to prove a point and to guide others. The rifle below would be well suited for competition, defense as well as hunting.
It would be my hope to turn this project BUILD an ARMALITE AR-10 in to reality in the second half of 2012. Albeit with a few changes to comply with local laws.
The Armalite AR-10A4 RIFLE GUNSMITH KIT really takes the pain out of selecting the bulk of the common parts. This frees up your time to work on the other components.

- Picatinny Rail Gas Block
The Daniel Defense AR10 12.0 Lite Rail was designed to work with the AR10 .308 rifle length gas systems; but works equally as well mounted over top of a low profile gas block. The rail and bolt up plate are machined from 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum and all fasteners are military specification. The Free Float rail’s unique “Bolt Up” mounting system mates with the upper receiver to create a singular ‘monolithic’ rail along the entire top portion of the rifle. The rail interface not only free-floats the rifle’s barrel for improved accuracy, but also generates huge benefits when mounting optics and accessories.
The generic A2 stock is functional, economic, suited to competition, hunting and balances the 20″ barrel nicely.
Every build simply needs to include the BAD ASS AMBIDEXTROUS SAFETY SELECTOR. Armalite offers it as an option. It’s a no brainer.
As mentioned elsewhere all my builds will now receive the MechArmor TacOps-1 Charging Handle until something better comes along. Fortunately Armalite offers this option. Update: No longer an option. Check out the AXTS here.
This MI MCTAR-FFG GAS BLOCK FLIP UP FRONT SIGHT is made specifically to be installed on the picatinny railed gas block of the Armalite AR-10. Midwest Industries produces premium quality hardware.
The MI MCTAR-ERS is the complimentary rear sight for the MI MCTAR-FFG.
Here’s the thing about the Armalite scope mounts. They may not be as tacticool looking as the scope mounts that cost 3x-4x more but they have a few things going for them. They are reliable , battle tested and proven at a price that is very attractive.
If you want even more options than listed on this page Armalite offers a Premiere Services Division that is essentially a custom shop for your one of a kind AR-10 needs.
ARMALITE AR-10 MAGAZINES
Armalite gets a little heat online for their magazine design. This stems from the now defunct Assault Weapons ban. During that time Armalite began using modified M14 magazines to make the AR-10 AWB compliant. There were some shooters who complained of reliability issues with these modified magazines. Now here’s the thing. Those issues are long gone. In fact Armalite redesigned the magazines and adjusted the rifles to perfection. As a service Armalite can upgrade earlier AR-10 rifles to the generation II specifications for a nominal charge.
PMAGs – There is also a lot of talk about MAGPUL PMAGS in an AR-10. First off the PMAGS will not work in an ARMALITE AR-10. Secondly while the PMAGS are a necessity for some other manufacturers weapons to operate reliably it’s a non issue for the Armalite AR-10. Lastly is the cost. Armalite magazines have a reputation for being expensive. That is simply not the case. In fact the 20 round AR-10 magazines are often a few dollars cheaper then other manufacturers OEM magazines. If there was an AR-10 PMAG cost would be the only reason to consider it. It doesn’t exist so the point is moot. The only example of expensive AR-10 magazines is the 25 round capacity models. BTW is there another company that offers reliable 25 round 308 AR platform magazines? I think not.
Armalite offers more magazine options then any other 308 AR manufacturer. There are options for 5, 10, 15, 20 ad 25 round capacities to satisfy any need or law.
Update – It’s a different world since writing this. There are now Armalite AR-10 rifles and lower receivers that accept 308 AR PMAGS
