I find it interesting that two of the most expensive .308 bolt carrier groups are designed with philosophies that are 180 degrees apart. The JP Low Mass 308 Bolt Carrier Group is a lightweight BCG that must be used in conjunction with JP Rifles Low Mass Recoil System. On the other end of the spectrum is the Lantac E-BCG .308 part number LA00300. In a market of “me too” inexpensive bolt carrier groups Lantac differentiates itself with superb quality, brilliant engineering and patents that deliver one of the best performing BCG’s available.

The Lantac E-BCG is designed to be weight balanced from front to back. This makes for a pretty heavy bolt carrier group. The added weight increases lock time and should theoretically reduce recoil. That additional mass combined with the BCG’s NiB  coating lubricity equates to smooth cyclic function. Lantac has designed “Port Forward” channels into the carrier body to direct gases out and away from the bolt. Suppressed shooters will really benefit from these features. Lantac designed a round gas key or “smooth cam”. To me this is a halfway point between the POF gas key which is a ball bearing and a standard square gas key. The Lantac E BCG cost about twice as much as traditional quality carriers and that hasn’t stopped it from becoming wildly popular. In fact other manufacturers such as ADM offer it for sale among their own hardware. Lastly it’s a crazy sign of the times wen you can spend $300-$450 on a 308 bolt carrier and for about one third more buy a cheap and complete AR-308/AR-10.

The LANTAC E-BCG Enhanced Bolt Carrier Group is precision machined from 8620 Steel with a shot peened bolt manufactured from Carpenter 158 and Magnetically Particle Inspected. The entire carrier assembly is NiB, Electroless Nickel Boron coated with the patented, advanced UCT EXO process, unlike standard NiB coatings. This offers extreme lubricity with a friction coefficient of .02 and surface hardness of 82-85 Rockwell C.

The carriers patent pending design features unique shrouded and forward facing gas ports that have also been re sized so that gas is vented differently to a standard carrier. This results in a system that runs flatter with a smoother energy pulse. In addition, the system also runs cooler and cleaner and there is also less pressurization of the upper receiver when running a suppressed barrel. The flared boss at the tail of the carrier enhances the BCG’s lock position within the upper and makes it more consistent, resulting in an accuracy improvement.

All critical dimensions are hard turned / ground after heat treat and the bore of the carrier and gas key have been hard chrome lined for the best possible wear resistance. All E-BCG’s feature the LANTAC CP-R360 patent pending domed cam pin that is machined from 17-4PH Stainless Steel and hardened to H900 condition (45RC approx). The ultra-smooth head reduces wear within the upper receiver. Gas keys are properly staked at four points and only grade 8 fasteners are used in assembly.

The E-BCG’s forward porting and unique shape assist in reducing pressurization inside the upper receiver that can be caused by short barrel rifles running suppressors.
However, it should be noted that the E-BCG™ is not a complete solution for this issue and all rifles are different. ‘Over Gassed’ guns will suffer to a larger extent from this problem.

We frequently get inquiries from shooters looking for AR-10 Barrel Extensions. Of course if you have been following this site long enough you know that they probably are not looking for AR-10 barrel extensions but instead  in most cases looking for DPMS LR-308 compatible 308 AR/AR308 barrel extensions. Furthermore if one has the skills to mate a barrel and barrel extension why limit themselves to Armalite AR-10 bolt carrier groups.

Barrel Extension Considerations

  1. Armalite AR-10 and DPMS Compatible Barrel Extensions are different. The require different bolts.
  2. The barrel extension dictates the bolt to be used with the carrier
  3. AR-10 can use a DPMS barrel with a DPMS barrel and barrel extension as long as a DPMS 308 bolt is used
  4. DPMS platform can use an AR-10 barrel and barrel extension as long as an AR-10 bolt is used
  5. Do not use the same bolt with more than one barrel. Every barrel extension/barrel combination requires it’s own dedicated bolt.
  6. Theoretically AR-10 and DPMS 308 Bolt Carriers are interchangeable as long as the bolt style matches the barrel extension
  7. DPMS G2 (DPMS GII) is not compatible with AR-10 or DPMS 308 barrel extensions. G2 is a different platform completely

Note: While above we state the interchangeability between AR-10 and DPMS platforms we feel it is bad practice and unnecessary to mix the brands.

Note: To date the only place we know to acquire an actual AR-10 barrel extension is from Armalite. DPMS is the standard most manufacturers have adopted. Be careful when a seller refers to AR-10. If compatibility isn’t clear and obvious contact the manufacturer or vendor.

Salt bath nitriding is sometimes referred to as ferritic nitrocarburizing, as well as salt bath nitrocarburizing. It is a process that involves thermo chemical diffusion, where a compound layer of carbon and nitrogen is simultaneously introduced to the surface of ferrous metal parts. A variety of metals can be treated with salt bath nitriding, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and sintered and cast iron parts.

MDT SKELETON CARBINE STOCK

Modular Driven Technologies aka “MDT” is well know for being a leader on bolt action rifle chassis particularly their TAC21. MDT is also the rifle chassis provider for Brownells, Winchester, Weatherby and Mossberg to name a few. Many shooters may not realize that MDT also offers a skeletonized carbine stock that with proper buffer system hardware can also be used with the AR-15, AR-10 and 308 AR rifles (See the chart below). The MDT “SCS” is a great Magpul PRS alternative. Available in black or FDE.

For about thirty dollars more than the standard MDT Skeleton Stock there is an upgraded version of the carbine stock the includes and adjustable cheek riser.

MDT SKELETON CARBINE STOCK

The MDT SKELETON CARBINE STOCK has been designed to allow maximum adjustability while minimizing weight. The adjustability allows each shooter to optimize superior ergonomics for multiple shooting positions. The weight has been minimized by skeletonization while retaining the strength of the stock. The SKELETON CARBINE STOCK is crafted in 6061 aluminum with Cerakote®.

The SCS without the cheekpiece weighs 1.43-1.48lbs depending on the length of the buffer tube used and without spacers.

The SCS has 3 QD attachment points (one on each side and one on the bottom) to allow the shooter multiple choices for carrying. The SCS also has provision on the bottom of the stock to allow for the attachment of a picatinny rail.

The user is able to finely adjust the LOP by using the wheel mechanism located on the body of the SCS. LOP can be locked into position by tightening the lower bolt. The angle of the SCS can also be adjusted by loosening the top two screws on the body. This allows the body to align with the buffer tube by using the scribe mark down the buffer tube and the offset scribe mark on the SCS body.

A soft foam guard has been placed on the SCS to allow for use with low optics. This foam guard provides comfort against the elements. The foam guards position is able to be adjusted by moving it horizontally along the buffer tube.

The buttpad on the SCS can be adjusted horizontally, vertically, and angularly. By loosening the setscrew on the rear portion of the buttpad, the buttpad can be adjusted vertically. Once the buttpad has been moved up, two screws will be revealed. To adjust the angle of the buttpad, or move it in the horizontal plane, these screws must be loosened.

The SCS must be used with a custom MDT buffer tube and standard castle nut. This MDT buffer tube has a scribe mark down the center to allow the shooter to zero the angle of the SCS if they wish. On the body of the SCS there is another machined marking to further allow the shooter to precisely angle their stock to suit their needs.

MDT offers various buffer tubes lengths to allow shooters to choose their Length of Pull. To use these buffer tubes with AR-15 and AR-10 buffer systems, one or more spacers will be included with your purchase.

  1. When using the 8.75” long SCS, an AR15 carbine buffer tube system can be used as it has the internal length of an AR-15 carbine buffer tube. AR-10 carbine buffer tube systems and AR-10/AR15 rifle buffer tube systems are not compatible.
  2. When using the 9.75” or 10.75” long SCS, an AR-10 Carbine Buffer Tube System can be used, as it has the same internal length as an AR-10 Carbine Buffer Tube. An AR-15 carbine buffer tube system can be used with the use of a .625” spacer inserted into the buffer tube.
  3. When using the 11.75” long SCS, an AR-15/AR-10 Rifle Buffer Tube System can be used, as it has the same internal length as an AR15/AR10 Rifle Buffer Tube. An AR-15 carbine buffer tube system can be used with the 2.3” spacer. An AR10 Carbine Buffer Tube System can be used with the 1.7” spacer inserted into the buffer tube.

The buffer tube comes in various lengths to allow for proper Length Of Pull (LOP) for any rifle, while maintaining the correct internal length for an AR-15 buffer system.
