I have wanted a carbon fiber wrapped .308 barrel for quite some time, but three things have stopped me up until this point, necessity, price, and accuracy. For this build, the necessity comes from the desire to reduce weight, and the 16″ carbon fiber-wrapped, fluted barrel weighs nearly 25% percent less than my similar Criterion Hybrid .308 barrel. The price, well it is what it is. Regarding accuracy, some carbon fire barrels have a reputation for stringing when they get hot, BSF does not.

The .308 Winchester chambered 16 inch BSF Carbon Fiber Barrel appears to be the obvious choice for my new “CT Other Lightweight 308 AR build“. I’m looking forward to completing the build to see what this barrel can do.

I sent off an email to BSF and within hours I was able to claim the last .308 Winchester blank allotted to their next barrel run. Impressive Accuracy From a Lightweight, Futuristic Looking BSF 308 Barrel

BSF builds their .308 match-grade carbon fiber barrels with exceptional attention to detail that ensures you’ll achieve the best possible accuracy from your 308 AR-pattern rifle without getting a hernia lugging it around! BSF 308 barrels are turned from ordnance-grade 416R stainless steel, then given a roll-wrapped, tensioned, carbon fiber sleeve. The sleeve keeps weight down while providing excellent rigidity, coupled with enhanced cooling.

Why the sleeve method, rather than simple carbon fiber wrapping? The BSF folks believe wrapping traps heat and, as a result, is more likely to delaminate. Further, BSF uses a special carbon fiber that expands at the same rate as the 416R, and holes drilled into the jacket allow air to circulate around the barrel and vent heat quickly. Less heat distortion means far less risk of accuracy fade as your .308 Winchester chambered AR308 barrel heats up.

Current lead times on our barrels can be up to 12+ weeks. Some calibers will ship sooner than others but at this point, we are no longer guaranteeing that a barrel will be shipped by a certain date due to delays in materials for our production team and high volume of orders. 

After turning down the barrel, we jacket a 416R Stainless steel match barrel in a roll-wrapped carbon fiber sleeve and load it under tension.  We use this jacketing method rather than wrapping the barrel in carbon fiber because this method of wrapping has been proven to trap heat and cause delamination.

 The carbon fiber we use is specially designed to move at the same expansion rate as 416R stainless steel. We machine slots into the carbon fiber allowing air to move around the barrel and vent heat quicker without any delamination issues.  Using the Carbon Fiber this way keeps the rifling straighter the warmer the barrel gets because it’s under tension. This allows us to maintain superior stiffness and strength while keeping the barrel extremely lightweight.
