When the AR15 system was first introduced to and fielded by the US Military in the 1960s, the manual of arms for an infantryman was significantly different than what currently exists today.  To charge the rifle the shooter released their hand from a firing grip, grabbed each side of the charging handle with the thumb and forefinger or the first two fingers, (while applying pressure to the latch) pulled the charging handle all the way to the rear, and then released it to charge the weapon.

Like everything else in the last 45 years, tactics and weaponry have undergone a continuous evolution.  Red dot optics get the shooter on target quicker, shorter barrels allow the operator to more quickly negotiate tighter urban areas, and operator’s manipulations of the weapon system have become much more efficient and faster.  The current manual of arms has the operator maintaining a firing grip almost continuously while manipulating the weapon with the non-dominant hand in an effort to more quickly get the weapon ready to fire.  With that premise, most weapon manipulations are done only with the shooter’s support hand; to include operating the charging handle.

In order to perform an immediate action or charge the carbine, current CQB techniques have the operator racking the charging handle to the rear using their support side hand only.  This is done in one swift and strong movement.  With the operator’s firing grip maintained, the weapon again has a loaded chamber, and the shooter can immediately bring a hot weapon back into the fight.

The current use of extended tactical latches has made this movement much more efficient.  The only drawback to this type of manipulation is all the force used to rack the charging handle rearward goes into the extended tactical latch and is then transferred into the roll pin.  With this scenario, the entire operation becomes contingent on the sheer strength of this tiny 1/16” roll pin, and its ability to take continuing blows.  Repeated and forceful support hand only racking of the charging handle eventually can lead to breaking the roll pin and loosing the latch completely.  With the latch blown out, the charging handle will not stay secured to the receiver as the bolt is moving back and forth during each cycle of the weapon’s action.  Not a good situation on a two way range.

The BCMGUNFIGHTER Charging Handle and extended latches feature internal redesigns to direct the force off of the roll pin and into the body of the charging handle during support hand only manipulations.  This new design has a built in backstop engineered into the extended latch and into the charging handle.  As the latch is opened up, its’ travel is limited by these flat surface backstops.  With this travel limiting feature, the stress is taken off the roll pin, and is now redirected into the entire body of the charging handle.

The BCMGUNFIGHTER™ Charging Handle offers two significant advantages.

  • Since the tiny roll pin is no longer the weak point – it is a much stronger system and tactical latch will stay intact even under repeated support side only manipulation
  • With the force kept inside the body of the handle, when the handle is pulled directly to the rear, it moves directly to the rear and does not angle off to the outboard side.  A much smoother operation.

August 2016 – As I update this “308 AR Bolt Carrier” webpage I am a little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of companies offering 308 bolt carrier groups. I would caution anyone about using no-name, inexpensive generic BCG’s.

This page only applies to standard gas operated .308 AR type rifles. Piston driven AR’s will be covered elsewhere.

Dimensionally Armalite and DPMS bolt carriers groups are nearly identical to within a few thousandth’s of an inch of each other. This means they are interchangeable. However the one thing to keep in mind is you cant interchange the bolts between the different brands of bolt carrier. This means only use an Armalite bolt in an Armalite bolt carrier and a DPMS bolt in a DPMS bolt carrier.

DPMS offers two variation. One with a standard mil spec finish and the other in hard chrome. DPMS also sells the individual components so you can build a bolt carrier group from the ground up. They also offer a hard chrome bolt that can be utilized with either of their bolt carrier offerings as well as the Fulton Armory and JP Rifles bolt carriers.

Fulton Armory offers two versions of their bolt carrier. The first is a standard DPMS LR-308 type and the second is a modified version that features a side cocking handle installed. The side cocking model is only to be used with an upper receiver milled to function with the side cocking handle. Using the side cocking model in a standard upper will damage you and your rifle.

AR10 Full Auto Style for increased mass and lock time. Our new 308 BCG is precision machined from 8620 Steel with a 9310 Precision Hard Ground, Magnetically Particle Inspected Bolt. The entire carrier assembly is NiB, Electroless Nickel Boron coated with the patented, advanced UCT EXO process, unlike standard NiB coatings. In addition the system also runs cooler and cleaner, there is also less pressurization of the upper receiver when running a suppressed barrel.

The flared boss at the tail of the carrier enhances the 308 BCG’s position within the buffer tube at the time of cycling and allows for a flatter more controlled reciprocation of the assembly. All critical dimensions are hard turned / ground after heat treat. All E-BCG’s feature the LANTAC CP-R360-H™ patent pending domed cam pin that is machined from 17-4PH Stainless Steel and hardened to H900 condition (45RC approx).

The ultra smooth head reduces wear within the upper receiver. The BCG’s weight helps to increase lock time with smoother operation. Gas keys are properly staked at four points and only grade 8 fasteners are used in assembly. The E-BCG’s forward porting and unique shape assist in reducing pressurization inside the upper receiver that can be caused by short barrel rifles running suppressors. However, it should be noted that the E-BCG™ is not a complete solution for this issue and all rifles are different. ‘Over Gassed’ guns will suffer to a larger extent from this problem.

DPMS LR-308 MAGAZINES

If you want steel magazines for any DPMS/SR25 platform based weapon DPMS is your best bet. Now here’s the thing. A couple years back DPMS had a bad run of magazines and they are still out there. You can tinker with them to make them work or call DPMS and exchange them. DPMS is pretty good about it. Also keep in mind DPMS still lets out the occasional bad magazine. The prior sentences apply. If your nor sure you have a bad magazine buy a PMAG and eliminate that variable.

MAGPUL LR20 308 AR MAGAZINES -308 PMAG

The MAGPUL LR20 308 AR Magazines are simply the most reliable magazine for the DPMS/SR25 platform based weapons. If you have a DPMS that doesnt feed and function properly these magazine will eliminate a faulty magazine. I cannot attest to their durability as they are relatively new to the market.

At $20 they are a steal.

ARMALITE AR-10 MAGAZINES

To the best of my knowledge the only magazines available for the Armalite AR-10 are manufactured by Armalite. MAGPUL PMAGS do not work in the AR-10 platform.

Armalite takes some heat from the uninformed about their magazines. During the AWB Armalite switched to modified M14 magazines and initially there were some feeding issues. Today this is not an issue. The magazines and weapons function perfectly. In fact if you have an AR-10 made during the AWB period Armalite will upgrade it to the current standard for use with standard Armalite AR-10 magazines for a nominal fee.

Magazine cost was another factor detractors of the AR-10 platform would oftenbring up. Current AR-10 magazines are sold for about the same price as DPMS factory magazines.

Lastly Armalite offers 25 round magazines for the AR-10. No other 308 AR manufacturer has been able to pull that off.

Update: Armalite now also produces the original AR10 rifle that will accept Magpul magazines

DPMS LR-308 MAGAZINES

ProMag 308 AR MAGAZINES

ProMag is a newcomer to the 308 AR field. Typically ProMag makes premium magazines but to date there is little information available. If they prove reliable priced at $29 they will be a great alternative to factory DPMS 308 magazines.

Mag-Tec 308 AR MAGAZINES

I have no idea who Mag-Tec is but reviews are less than favorable at online stores. We also have a discussion over at the 308AR.com forum. At nearly $40 they cost more than DPMS factory magazines and twice as much as 308 PMAGS.
