Making the Best of a Bad Situation “CT Other AR-10”

Note: August 25, 2023, Since writing the page, Connecticut went further off the deep end with gun control. Completing this build isn’t worth the hassle. Eventually, I will leave Connecticut for a gun-friendly red state. Until that time, this build is for reference only.

This .308 AR rifle build is one of the more exciting projects created for this website. This build falls into the category of an unexpected opportunity, where the project started life and where it ends are pretty far apart.
For those of you who are not aware, this site is based firmly behind enemy lines in Connecticut, one of the most gun-restrictive states in the country. Living in Connecticut means I can’t buy any AR-10s, AR-15s, or any other rifle similar in function. This means to generate fresh content, I need to use one of my existing .308s. I don’t like to do this because I prefer my rifles just the way they are!

Ghost Guns, 80% Lowers and Pistol Braces

Well, my friends, here’s where things begin to get interesting. Recently, the clowns in Hartford decided to go after Ghost guns or 80% as we refer to them. This action, combined with a BATFE ruling on Pistol Braces, opened the door for a brand new class of firearms, the “CT Other.” A CT Other is a firearm that’s neither a pistol nor a rifle.
While not ideal, it gets Connecticut gun owners back in the game and somewhat restores our right to keep and bear arms as intended.
Naturally, when I learned this, I headed off to a local gun shop, Greyson’s Guns in Orange, Connecticut, and ordered a couple of Aero precision M5 stripped lowers. Life was briefly good.
My original plan was for a CT Other 6.5 Creedmoor build. That plan didn’t last long.

Enter COVID-19

Unfortunately, while this 6.5 Creedmoor build was in the planning stages, civilization was struck with a coronavirus, COVID-19, and that changed everything for me.
As I watched the world’s pathetic response to Covid 19, I began to evaluate what could go wrong in society if panic, hoarding, and looting became a real thing. As part of this evaluation, I looked at my “Go-To” guns, one of which is my Armalite AR-10 A4CF. The Armalite AR-10 is a solid rifle. It’s simple, accurate, and reliable but, by today’s standards, somewhat heavy.

This got me thinking a few things. First off, a CT Other AR-10, being a firearm that is not shoulder-fired, should be lighter than a standard AR-10. I also re-evaluated my caliber selection. In crazy times, ammunition availability is probably the primary concern. To be blunt, you’re not going to find 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition in stores or randomly in the hands of your fellow man. In troubled times, it’s always advisable to stick with the ammunition used by Police, Military, and a majority of civilian hunters and shooters. This makes .308 Winchester the only option for this “CT Other” AR-10.

CT Other Lightweight 308 AR

This lightweight .308 AR rifle build isn’t an attempt to build the lightest 308 possible, featuring skeletonized hardware, carbon fiber, and titanium parts. This rifle is more of a practical approach, and the weight reduction will be realized by using a 16″ carbon fiber barrel.

Note: As readers are well aware, I do not like to use the terms AR-10 and 308 AR interchangeably. For this project, I understand that most will be using Google to search AR-10 “CT Other” or a similar variation, but make no mistake, this rifle is a 308 AR, not an AR-10.

Aero Precision M5 .308 AR Stripped Receiver Set APCS100151S

The choice to build this rifle based on an Aero Precision M5 .308 AR Stripped Receiver Set was simple, and I got lucky. Generally speaking, I am a big proponent of the Aero Precision M5 series .308 AR platform. The M5 is a reliable platform; other than the magazine catch button, the M5 is vanilla in design. The lucky part comes from the fact that my local gun shop, Greyson’s Guns, had the Aero M5 stripped hardware in stock when I called.

BSF Barrels .308 Winchester Carbon Fiber Barrel 16" 1:10 Twist (DPMS Pattern 308 AR)

I have wanted a carbon fiber-wrapped .308 AR barrel for quite some time, but three things have stopped me up until now: necessity, price, and accuracy. For this build, the necessity comes from the need to reduce weight, and the 16″ carbon fiber-wrapped, fluted barrel weighs nearly 25% percent less than my similar Criterion Hybrid .308 barrel. The price, well, it is what it is. Regarding accuracy, some carbon fiber barrels have a reputation for stringing when they get hot. BSF is a great company to deal with, and they stand by their barrels. The .308 Winchester chambered 16-inch BSF Carbon Fiber Barrel appears to be the obvious choice for this rifle.

BSF Barrels .308 Winchester Carbon Fiber Barrel Description and Specifications

Impressive Accuracy From a Lightweight, Futuristic-Looking Barrel

BSF builds their match-grade carbon fiber barrels with exceptional attention to detail that ensures you’ll achieve the best possible accuracy from your 308 AR-pattern rifle without getting a hernia lugging it around! BSF .308 Winchester barrels are turned from ordnance-grade 416R stainless steel, then given a roll-wrapped, tensioned, carbon fiber sleeve. The sleeve keeps weight down while providing excellent rigidity, coupled with enhanced cooling.

Why the sleeve method, rather than simple carbon fiber wrapping? The BSF folks believe wrapping traps heat and, as a result, is more likely to delaminate. Further, BSF uses a special carbon fiber that expands at the same rate as the 416R, and holes drilled into the jacket allow air to circulate around the barrel and vent heat quickly. Less heat distortion means far less risk of accuracy fade as your .308 Winchester chambered AR308 barrel heats up.

  • Fits .308 sized AR upper receiver
  • 5R button-rifled
  • 5/8″-24 tpi muzzle threads
  • .875″ O.D.
  • Barrel extension included
  • Requires RIFLE-length gas tube
  • Weight 28.4 ounces (16″ Fluted)
  • 11° Target Crown
  • DPMS Platform

BSF offers their .308 Winchester carbon fiber match barrels with a 1-10″ rifling twist effectively stabilizes that widest variety of popular bullet weights. And each barrel is thoroughly inspected by an experienced technician before leaving the BSR shop, ensuring you get a barrel that’s as accurate as it is good looking!

Picture of the Aero Precision M5 ATLAS S-ONE M-LOK Handguard Used For This CT Other Lightweight AR-10 Build

Aero Precision M5 ATLAS S-ONE M-LOK Handguard 12" Black

I decided on the 12″ Aero Precision M5 ATLAS S-ONE M-LOK Handguard for a couple of reasons. The M5 ATLAS S-ONE is minimalist in design, lightweight, and naturally lighter than the other suitable Aero Precision offering, the ATLAS R-ONE. I also chose this handguard because I like the narrow profile, ease of installation, and, admittedly, the appearance. The was an easy choice for this CT Other AR-10 Lightweight 308 AR build.

What’s the difference between the M5 ATLAS S-ONE and the ATLAS R-ONE? The ATLAS R-ONE has a full-length Picatinny rail, while the ATLAS S-ONE only has rail sections on the ends of the handguard.

Cryptic Coatings 308 Win Bolt Carrier Group Mystic Black

Cryptic Coatings .308 Win Bolt Carrier Group - Mystic Black

November 22, 2020. I originally wrote my original intention was to use a Toolcraft Bolt Carrier Group (read below) on this CT Other AR-10 Lightweight .308 build.

I went with a private-labeled Toolcraft BCG and kicked it up a notch with a Cryptic Coatings Mystic Black BCG. A fact that’s often never considered or perhaps overlooked is that despite all the various AR hardware parts and accessories brands, not all parts are self-manufactured. Often, specialty parts are manufactured by 3rd party suppliers and privately labeled by the name brands. Bolt carrier groups are a perfect example. Toolcraft is probably the largest supplier of BCGs in the industry.

I purchased a  Cryptic Coatings Mystic Black BCG because BSF barrels headspace their barrels with Toolcraft Bolts. I went with the Mystic Black Amorphous Carbon CVD finish because it’s the top-of-the-line coating. Its superbly smooth finish is engineered to minimize friction by cutting down the surface-to-surface contact between sliding parts. This finish reduces friction and dissipates heat, allowing for the least wear and tear.”

Power Drop-In Trigger from Hiperfire! HIPERFIRE’s customer base has clamored for an AR drop-in trigger that features the “feel” and hard-hitting hammers its triggers are known for. Most aftermarket drop-ins are notorious for LPS, light primer strikes. To get the pull weight down, designers have compromised their hammer fall. Not so with the new PDI line of triggers. These drop-ins pull at around 2 lbs. and sport HIPERFIRE’s unique HIPERSHOE that now mounts onto a curved bow, not just straight. The hammer strikes surpass SAAMI’s copper crusher spec and hit harder than MIL-spec M4/16 hammers. Wow! The pull? It’s a single stage. It’s short, sweet, and smooth as butter. The “feel” is almost transparent to the shooter. To top it all off, no PCC blowback violence can touch it. The PDI versions feature a hammer collision bumper. Its disconnector and disconnector spring are impact and crush protected. Is it just for PCC? No way. It’s just an excellent trigger. Anyone can appreciate it shooting slow, fast, short-range, or for long-range precision, and on the move, it surpasses SAAMI’s rough handling specification.

Picture of a Radian Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handle Assembly .308 R0012

Radian Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handle Assembly .308 R0012

The Radian Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handle has been on my wishlist for a while now. Brownells summed up my reasoning very well and why this charging handle will be included in this CT Other AR-10 Lightweight 308 build.

If you’ve ever shot a suppressed AR chambered in .308 Win., one of the immediate effects you’ll remember is the gas blowback that travels through the charging-handle cutout and into a shooter’s face. Radian Weapons has a solution for that in the form of its Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handles.

Where the Radian Weapons Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handle differs from traditional designs is in the inclusion of a ported shaft that shifts gas flow down and forward, in the opposite direction of a shooter. The ambi design of the handle also allows for rapid charging by blading the handle with either hand in one fast, fluid motion.

Radian Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handle Assembly .308

Radian Raptor-SD Ambidextrous Charging Handle Assembly

The silencer-optimized Raptor-SD™ features a ported shaft designed to redirect gasses down and forward, away from the shooter’s face when shooting suppressed. Its ambidextrous design allows rapid palm “blading” or finger-thumb charging of the weapon, ensuring the motion is fluid and fast from either the strong or support side. The Raptor-SD is compatible with most AR15/M16-pattern rifles. • Designed & Manufactured in the USA • Machined from 7075-T6 aluminum • MILSPEC Type 3 Hard Coat Anodized Finish w/ Cerakote Color Options

  • Ambidextrous for use from the strong side or support side.
  • Solid feel and dependable, smooth operation.
  • Smoothly machined edges reduce snags and are easy on your hands.
  • The design gives the rifle a unique, aggressive appearance.

PWS AR 308 Enhanced H2 Carbine Buffer

The PWS AR 308 Enhanced H2 Carbine Buffer is a 4140 Steel Body .308 Short Buffer that features a unique fluted design with minimum contact points so that debris can clear away easily. The FNC LIFE HD Surface Treatment chemically bonds in lubrication for smoother cycling. Used for .308 applications and ships with all MK2 series complete lowers and rifles. Shortened to work with AR-10 platforms using standard buffer tubes. Weighs 4.4 oz

What is Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (FNC)

Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (FNC) imparts high surface hardness, improved wear resistance, and fatigue resistance to a wide variety of carbon steel, alloy steel, and cast iron parts. Because the process is carried out at temperatures below 1100 F, retention of core properties and good dimensional control are achieved. In many applications, FNC treatment also improves corrosion resistance through the formation of a continuous compound layer on the work-piece surface which can allow for the elimination of subsequent protective plating operations or application of rust preventive.

Improve surface hardness and wear resistance with ferritic nitrocarburizing

The surface compound layer formed by FNC treatment is an epsilon iron-nitride compound and this layer may range in depth from .0002″ to .0010″ inch depending upon cycle parameters selected and base material being treated. FNC compound layer hardness values will typically range from 55 to 65 HRC depending on the base material being treated. Higher alloy steels with nitride forming elements (Cr, Mo, Ti, W, and Al) will have higher hardness compound layers than plain carbon and low alloy steels and will also benefit from the formation of an underlying higher hardness diffusion zone below the compound layer that gives improved fatigue life and helps to support the surface compound layer.

Ferritic Nitrocarburizing is often selected to replace chrome plating due to environmental concerns with plating. FNC also has been used as an alternative process to solve problems with size change and distortion associated with higher temperature treatments like carburizing or carbonitriding.

Scalarworks Leap Scope Mount

Scalarworks Leap Mount Quick Detach 30mm Scope Mount SW0700

The Sig Sauer Tango6T is not exactly the lightest AR scope available, so what better way to offset the scope’s weight than with one of the lightest and coolest scope mounts currently available? That scope mount is the Scalarworks Leap Mount. The 5.46-ounce weight is approximately 40-60 percent lighter than the competition, but the cool factor doesn’t end there. The Scalarworks Leap features an innovative ratchet-type QD mount and a strategically placed screw to remove the pain from scope leveling. That makes this mount an easy choice for this lightweight 308 AR. There was a close runner-up; American Defense is about to unleash their 5.4016 ounce AD Recon Full Titanium Scope Mount.

Scalarworks Mount

Scalarworks Leap Mount

The Scalarworks LEAP Scope Mount is one of the lightest quick-detach riflescope mounts on the market. The LEAP scope mount is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and uses 4140H steel hardware for absolute rigidity that results in a near-seamless integration between your rifle and optic. Scalarworks LEAP mounts are designed using two of the most efficient structures in engineering, the tubular boom, and I-beam bridge. These structures not only add strength and impact resistance to the mount but also allow for significant weight reduction. Additionally, LEAP Scope Mounts feature the Scalarworks’ LevelDrive screw that ensures that your scope is always perfectly level when in the mount.

Troy Industries Backup Folding Sights

Rugged, flip-up sights provide failsafe backup when your primary optic or red dot sight fails. Sight body flips up easily when you need it and locks securely in place under powerful spring pressure and two locking detent balls, so it can’t be accidentally bumped down until you hit the spring-loaded button on the left side of the base to retract it. Base clamps securely to any military or commercial Picatinny rail using a standard flathead screwdriver. No protruding knobs or levers to catch on brush, clothing, or other equipment. Sturdy, protective “ears” shield posts and apertures from impact. HK-Style Rear – two same-plane apertures: large .190″ aperture provides a wide field of view for close-in targets, while .070″ aperture is calibrated for engaging long-range targets. HK-Style Front – distinctive “globe” shape that aids in fast target acquisition under stress. Also available with a self-illuminating Tritium dot on the post for precise shot placement in low-light conditions.

Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous Safety Selector

The Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous safety selector is an easy way to make your AR-10 308 AR more user-friendly by allowing left and right-handed manipulations. It is important to be able to manipulate your rifle from multiple positions and this selector switch adds the ergonomics required to be able to do so. Machined from billet 7075-T6 aluminum, this safety selector can be changed between a 90° and 45° throw for faster operation.

The selector lever is easy to install with the spring-loaded retention spring that locks it in place without the need for screws. This ensures that it remains engaged and won’t come loose unless intended. The screw-less design reduces the risk of parts breakage so that your firearm is ready to be used at a moment’s notice. This simple addition will enhance any AR 308 by increasing ergonomics and usability for left-handed users.
