BROWNELLS BRN-10 RETRO RIFLE AR-10

For the first time in Brownells history, the company is manufacturing complete guns of its own in addition to selling tools, components and firearms made by other companies. It should come as no surprise that the new rifle line-up is composed of AR-15s and AR-10s considering the company’s long standing relationship with these platforms. However, the Brownells choice to offer carefully researched “retro” reproductions of historically significant models is certainly a refreshing one for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Brownells BRN-10 AR-10

The first four Retro AR-15s are chambered for .223 Rem./5.56 NATO. The BRN-16A1 is a semi-automatic version of the iconic M16A1 first fielded in the 1960s with matte gray anodized receivers, properly contoured black polymer furniture and a lightweight 20” M16A1 chrome-lined barrel. The BRN-601 is based on the original USAF contract rifle with green furniture, a slabside lower receiver and a triangular 601 charging handle. The XBRN16E1 reflects the transitional rifle in between 601 and M16A1, with features of both. The XBRN-177E2 is an authentic reproduction of an early Special Forces carbine featuring a period-correct flash hider with grenade ring, a full-fence M16A1 lower receiver and a collapsible stock.

The two variants of the BRN-10 rifle, based on the AR-10, are chambered in .308 Win./7.62 NATO. These models have the “trigger style” charging handle located on the top of the receiver inside the carry handle along with the same lines and contours as the first production AR-10s from the 1950s. With receiver sets designed in conjunction with FM-Products, these rifles are compatible with standard DPMS/SR25 components including triggers, magazines, barrels, bolt carrier groups and furniture sets. The BRN-10A (shown) has the same brown furniture found on early rifles, like the models issued by the Netherlands, while the BRN-10B is based on later models adopted by Cuba and other nations.

Brownells is taking pre-orders for Retro rifles now with shipping dates slated for the Spring of 2018.

Brownells BRN-10 AR-10

A Piece of History, Fresh from the Factory & Ready To Shoot

The BRN-10™ by Brownells is a recreation of Eugene Stoner’s original lightweight .308 caliber battle rifle that revolutionized rifle design forever. For the first time, it is possible for the shooter of average means to own – and shoot – a meticulously detailed, factory-new, semi-auto replica at a fraction of a scarce original’s price. The BRN-10™ accurately replicates the original .308 AR in great detail – and it’s built to modern standards using the latest manufacturing technology.

21st Century Technology Meets Historical Detail. Designed in partnership with FM Products, our BRN-10™ receivers are fully machined, not forged, from 7075 T6 aluminum billet. The distinctive lines of late Armalite® AR-10® rifles are carefully reproduced, including the slab-sided lower with straight magazine well. Takedown pins, selector lever, magazine release, and bolt release all have crisp horizontal serrations that match the original rifles.

Clean, Uncluttered, Still “Futuristic”. The absence of a forward assist and shell deflector makes the BRN-10™ upper unusually uncluttered. Up top is the original “trigger”-style charging handle prominently located under the carry handle and positioned for rapid, easy operation – a practical benefit somewhat lost with the later charging handle location.

The BRN-10’s rear sight is fully enclosed by the carry handle, like the original. A simple, A2-style horizontal thumbwheel lets you adjust elevation, while windage is changed by loosening a setscrew and drifting the rear peep. A small window in the rear of the carry handle lets you see the current elevation setting.

Detail Under the Hood. Inside the BRN-10™, the carrier has the distinctive flats and two stabilizing flanges at the rear found on early carriers, and the entire bolt/carrier group is chrome-plated. The bolt itself is machined from 9310 carbon steel and magnetic particle inspected (MPI) to make sure there are no microscopic flaws that could cause premature failure – a benefit the original guns did not have.

The BRN-10’s 20″ barrel, chambered in .308 Winchester, is made for Brownells by Faxon. It first gets a QPQ Nitride finish for excellent resistance to surface wear. After nitriding, the barrel gets top coat that replicates the look of the classic manganese phosphate finish found on the 1950s rifles.

The handguard drops in like a standard AR-15 handguard, but its external contours replicate the original AR-10® ’guard. Buttstock and pistol grip are from the Brownells Retro line; the buttstock is a Type D stock, without a trap door.

Choose Your Model. The Brownells BRN-10™ rifle is available in two models. The BRN-10A leans heavily on the earliest rifles, with an open 3-prong Dutch-style flash hider, functional heavy fluting on the barrel under the handguard, and brown furniture that mimics the look of the original fiberglass. The BRN-10B is inspired by later export rifles and has a closed-prong, Portuguese-type flash hider, later-style black furniture, and a lightweight barrel that makes for a surprisingly quick-handling .308 rifle.

Up-to-Date & Compatible. Brownells BRN-10™ rifles accept standard metal DPMS/SR-25 magazines. They are NOT compatible with Magpul PMAGs due to lower receiver contour. A majority of the components on the BRN-10™ are compatible with modern DPMS/SR-25 parts or AR-15 parts. See Compatibility Notes below.

The PSA Gen2 PA10 18″ Mid-Length .308 WIN Nitride Classic Rifle is among the cheapest AR10, 308 AR styled rifles to date. In fact the PSA PA10 is for sale at a price lower than most 308 OEM style rifles. When the PSA PA10 was released a few years ago not all the bugs were worked out of the PSA 308 hardware. Same can be said for many other brands as well. That was then this now. As of this writing Palmetto State Armory is on their second generation of the PA-10 aptly named PSA Gen2 PA10 and there are now many happy owners making themselves known on the 308 AR Online Forum.

Note: PSA also offers an ample supply of 308 parts to build your own PA-10 or compliment an existing rifle with a new upper. Buy a spare upper for $149 and get started on a 6.5 Creedmoor AR….you know you want to.

LANTAC .308/7.62X51MM Enhanced Full Auto Style Bolt Carrier Group NiB Coated E-BCG

Lantac Enhanced BCG Full Auto Style E-BCG Enhanced Bolt Carrier Group 308

LANTAC .308/7.62X51MM Enhanced Full Auto Style Bolt Carrier Group NiB Coated E-BCG

I find it interesting that two of the most expensive .308 bolt carrier groups are designed with philosophies that are 180 degrees apart. The JP Low Mass 308 Bolt Carrier Group is a lightweight BCG that must be used in conjunction with JP Rifles Low Mass Recoil System. On the other end of the spectrum is the Lantac E-BCG .308 part number LA00300. In a market of “me too” inexpensive bolt carrier groups Lantac differentiates itself with superb quality, brilliant engineering and patents that deliver one of the best performing BCG’s available.

The Lantac E-BCG is designed to be weight balanced from front to back. This makes for a pretty heavy bolt carrier group. The added weight increases lock time and should theoretically reduce recoil. That additional mass combined with the BCG’s NiB  coating lubricity equates to smooth cyclic function. Lantac has designed “Port Forward” channels into the carrier body to direct gases out and away from the bolt. Suppressed shooters will really benefit from these features. Lantac designed a round gas key or “smooth cam”. To me this is a halfway point between the POF gas key which is a ball bearing and a standard square gas key. The Lantac E BCG cost about twice as much as traditional quality carriers and that hasn’t stopped it from becoming wildly popular. In fact other manufacturers such as ADM offer it for sale among their own hardware. Lastly it’s a crazy sign of the times wen you can spend $300-$450 on a 308 bolt carrier and for about one third more buy a cheap and complete AR-308/AR-10.

Lantac Enhanced BCG Full Auto Style (.308/7.62) LANTAC E-BCG™, Enhanced Bolt Carrier Group.

The LANTAC E-BCG Enhanced Bolt Carrier Group is precision machined from 8620 Steel with a shot peened bolt manufactured from Carpenter 158 and Magnetically Particle Inspected. The entire carrier assembly is NiB, Electroless Nickel Boron coated with the patented, advanced UCT EXO process, unlike standard NiB coatings. This offers extreme lubricity with a friction coefficient of .02 and surface hardness of 82-85 Rockwell C.

The carriers patent pending design features unique shrouded and forward facing gas ports that have also been re sized so that gas is vented differently to a standard carrier. This results in a system that runs flatter with a smoother energy pulse. In addition, the system also runs cooler and cleaner and there is also less pressurization of the upper receiver when running a suppressed barrel. The flared boss at the tail of the carrier enhances the BCG’s lock position within the upper and makes it more consistent, resulting in an accuracy improvement.

All critical dimensions are hard turned / ground after heat treat and the bore of the carrier and gas key have been hard chrome lined for the best possible wear resistance. All E-BCG’s feature the LANTAC CP-R360 patent pending domed cam pin that is machined from 17-4PH Stainless Steel and hardened to H900 condition (45RC approx). The ultra-smooth head reduces wear within the upper receiver. Gas keys are properly staked at four points and only grade 8 fasteners are used in assembly.

In addition the system also runs cooler and cleaner, there is also less pressurization of the upper receiver when running a suppressed barrel.
The flared boss at the tail of the carrier enhances the BCG’s position within the buffer tube at the time of cycling and allows for a flatter more controlled reciprocation of the assembly.
All critical dimensions are hard turned / ground after heat treat.
All E-BCG’s feature the LANTAC CP-R360-H™ patent pending domed cam pin that is machined from 17-4PH Stainless Steel and hardened to H900 condition (45RC approx).

The E-BCG’s forward porting and unique shape assist in reducing pressurization inside the upper receiver that can be caused by short barrel rifles running suppressors.
However, it should be noted that the E-BCG™ is not a complete solution for this issue and all rifles are different. ‘Over Gassed’ guns will suffer to a larger extent from this problem.

REMINGTON REMOVES R15 and R25 G2 from Product Lineup 2018

REMINGTON REMOVES R15 and R25 G2 from Product Lineup 2018

Where have the Remington AR Rifles gone?
Where have the Remington AR Rifles gone?

Where have the Remington AR Rifles gone? No R-15, No R-25 GII

So I was browsing the internet and happened across the Remington 2018 catalog. I noticed three omissions from the product lineup. The first is the Remington 700 Tactical chassis which is the Remington 700 MDT TAC21 rifle. This makes sense as Remington now has their own chassis rifle the 700 PCR (Precision Chassis Rifle).  No surprise there. What did surprise me was the lack of the R-15 the Remington version of an AR-15. More importantly to folks at 308ar.com was the 308 AR by way of the R-25 GII is also missing. No of course it’s understood that DPMS covers both models and Bushmaster has the XM-15 and full size 308 XM-10.

In my view it’s symbolically important that these semi-automatics be represented first hand by the name Remington. Remington is an old household name even among non shooters.  Any speculation on the reasoning?

The catalog is available here but availability has been spotty. I have made a reduced file size 40mb available below.

Rise of Untraceable Ghost Guns | Targeting 80 Percent Receivers

Rise of Untraceable Ghost Guns | Targeting 80 Percent Receivers

Market Emerges For Untraceable Ghost Guns

Lately It seems every weekend I’m greeted with another news article relating to “Ghost Guns” or as we refer to them 80% receivers. I just take another sip of my coffee and shake my head in amazement. I wonder to myself is the other side this naive or ignorant to simply not understand that firearms are simply mechanical devices and with modern manufacturing technologies and process they are easily reproducible. Then my gun owner paranoia hits me and I wonder if maybe there’s more to this, a bigger, more sinister agenda. Maybe it’s not that billet of aluminum they are trying to keep out of our hands after all but instead all the individual parts that make the whole of a gun.

What if in the next few years the political climate swings far enough in the other direction that the anti-gun crowd gains enough of a political majority to do whatever they want with regards to gun control. What if they find a way to make the critical parts of a gun regulated, parts such as the upper receivers, triggers, stocks and barrels. Imagine a scenario where folks in restricted states not able to buy any parts to repair or upgrade their AR-15’s and AR-10’s. These states in most cases have already restricted magazines and have asinine restrictive laws in place. Then what if for the rest of the free country where the guns remain legal the owners are not permitted to buy aftermarket or spare parts? What if all firearm work must be performed by manufacturers or their “licensed” representatives. This would most likely choke most of the gun industry to death. Think about this for a minute.

Anyhow that’s my short rant. Read the Wall Street Journal article below.

Market Emerges For ‘Ghost Guns’ - Rise of Untraceable Ghost Guns ------- Click to Read

This article originally appears in the Wall Street Journal

Axel Galvez had a deal: $7,500 for five untraceable semiautomatic rifles. And he had a buyer: a felon who planned to ship them overseas. Now, he just needed weapons that would be invisible to regulators.

To avoid background checks, Mr. Galvez bought rifle parts, then assembled the five guns at the Los Angeles machine shop where he worked. He offered to build his buyer 100 more for $130,000.

An underground gun-making industry that enables criminals to elude background checks and bypass gun regulations is creating a growing trade of “ghost guns,” weapons that can’t be traced by police, authorities say.

Mr. Galvez’s buyer turned out to be a government informant; the 36-year-old machinist pleaded guilty in November to unlawful firearms manufacturing and dealing, according to court documents.

Ghost guns have been in the spotlight since a Northern California man, who was prohibited from possessing firearms because of a restraining order, killed five people in a November rampage using semiautomatic rifles that he made himself, police say. Other gunmen have employed the weapons as well. In 2016, a Baltimore man fired at police with a homemade AR-15, and Santa Monica shooter John Zawahri used a ghost gun in his shooting spree that killed five in 2013.

The number of these weapons in the U.S. is unknown. Because the guns bear no serial numbers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is unable to track them. Serial numbers and gun registration play a key role in police and government investigations, allowing officers to trace a weapon’s history and owners.

Ghost guns appear to be most prevalent in California, where there are restrictions on assault weapons that make it difficult to buy guns that are available in other states. But the firearms have been seized in criminal investigations in other states, including Arizona, Maryland, New York and Texas.

Graham Barlowe, resident agent in charge at the Sacramento, Calif., ATF field office, said the weapons are “a huge problem in my area.”

About 250 ghost guns were seized or purchased in undercover buys by his Sacramento agents in 2017, he said. While statistics from the previous year weren’t available, Mr. Barlowe noted that his office has seen a rise in the number of busts. The ATF doesn’t keep track of ghost gun seizures nationwide.

“It went from being a niche group of people that were into the gun culture that were the ones making them for themselves,” said Mr. Barlowe. “Now, they’ve become so commonplace we’re buying them from 17-year-old gang-members on the street.”

The starting point for building a ghost gun is an “unfinished receiver,” a metal or polymer piece that houses the firing mechanism. It can be purchased online without a background check, because the ATF doesn’t classify the part as a firearm.

Buyers can finish the receiver with a drill press or a computerized metal-cutting machine and then add the remaining pieces, all of which are readily available online. Some gun parts can also be made using 3-D printers.

A finished receiver is considered a firearm by the ATF.

“There is a loophole under federal law that allows an individual to make a firearm,” said Justin Lee, a federal prosecutor in Sacramento who has handled several ghost gun cases. “That loophole only extends to that person. The person breaks the law as soon as they are transferring that firearm.”

Mr. Galvez, the Los Angeles machinist, now faces up to 10 years in federal prison. His attorney, Lawrence Strauss, said his client wasn’t any sort of illicit gun trafficker and “was just looking for a way to make extra money.”

The prevalence of online retailers and YouTube instructional videos has given ghost guns a boost, according to Mr. Barlowe. He said illicit gun dealers can buy parts for an AR-15 style rifle for about $700, put in a few hours of sweat equity, and sell it on the street for $1,000 to $2,000.

One Elk Grove, Calif., man caught by Mr. Barlowe’s team pleaded guilty early last year to selling 92 AR-15 style rifles, five handguns and 88 silencers, all without serial numbers, for $264,500 over a six-month period in 2015

Companies that sell the unfinished receivers and gun-rights advocates including the Firearms Policy Coalition say law-enforcement concerns are overblown. People who make these guns are generally hobbyists who “want to build things with their own hands,” said Tilden Smith, president of 80% Arms, which manufactures unfinished receivers and sells them online.

“There are much easier ways [to get guns] that’ll appeal to criminals,” said Mr. Smith.

Gun-owners distrustful of registering their firearms with the government also are customers. “Unserialized, Unregistered” is the slogan for GhostGuns.com, which sells handgun kits, unfinished receivers, and other items. Kyle Martin, president of Ghost America LLC, which runs the site, said customers “want to enjoy their complete freedom as American citizens.”

The emerging market has begun to attract scrutiny from gun-control groups and state lawmakers. Mr. Martin’s company was recently targeted by the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The nonprofit, which promotes gun control and fights gun violence, sent a letter to his web host asking it to shut down GhostGuns.com for allegedly violating the terms of service, an allegation Mr. Martin denied.

The California State Legislature passed a bill in 2016 that would have defined unfinished receivers as firearms requiring background checks. Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the legislation, saying the wording of the bill was vague and could have unintended consequences, but he signed a separate law that will make California the first state to require anyone who owns a firearm without a serial number to apply for one by 2019. The National Rifle Association opposed the legislation.

Lilja 6.5 Creedmoor Drop In AR308 Barrels

When it comes to rifle barrels they can often be separated into different classes of performance. The top level performers are what I refer to as “No Excuses Barrels”. Lilja is one of the small handful of custom barrel manufactures producing these no excuses barrels for winning competitive shooters world wide. More importantly Lilja Rifle Barrels was named exclusive supplier for .30 caliber Mk13, Mod 7, and .50 caliber Mk15 barrels for the Navy SEALS. Lilja is now offering benchrest level performance 6.5 Creedmoor drop in barrels for 308 AR/AR308 shooters. They are available in 20″, 24″ fluted and unfluted.

We are offering an AR type barrel chambered for the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridges. These are available in four styles and all are completely finished drop-in type barrels. They are finish-chambered and have a DPMS style barrel extension installed and the gas port hole drilled for a rifle-length gas system. They also are threaded 5/8″ – 24 at the muzzle. These barrels are not compatible with the Armalite or Rock River Arms rifles.

All versions of this stainless steel AR-type barrel are chambered with a PTG semi-auto match reamer. These barrels are rifled with our 8″ twist 3-groove. These barrels are also hand-lapped to our internal finish standards. The section forward of the gas block section is engraved: “Lilja AR 6.5 Creedmoor” The barrel extensions are a DPMS type and these barrels will headspace properly with DPMS type bolts. The gas block and gas port holes are positioned for standard rifle length gas tubes.
