Cryptic Coatings Mystic Black Bolt Carrier Group .308 Winchester

Recently I was researching 308 Bolt Carrier Groups for our CT Other Light Weight AR-10 build and I decided to go with a Toolcraft BCG as that’s the brand BSF Barrels uses to headspace their Carbon Fiber Barrels like the one I bought for the aforementioned 308 build mentioned above. Unfortunately, I couldn’t locate the Toolcraft BCG I needed but some additional research lead me to Cryptic Coatings, specifically their Mystic Black Bolt Carrier Group.

I spent a decent amount of time reading Cryptic Coatings Mystic Black Bolt Carrier Group Reviews and decided I MUST buy one. Unfortunately, the Mystic Black in .308 Winchester was out of stock. I was bummed out but not deterred as Primary Arms let me backorder one BCG. I also decided to send an email to Cryptic Coatings. To my surprise, I received a call from the wonderful Karen H of Cryptic Coatings who graciously offered to save me one from the next run of .308 Mystic Black Bolt Carriers.

Three days later the Primary Arms order was delivered and about a month later Karen called me again to tell me my BCG had shipped. So yes I now own two very nice and expensive Cryptic Coatings Mystic Black Bolt Carrier Groups.

Cryptic Coatings Bolt Carrier Group Mystic Black .308 Winchester

Founded in January 2014, Cryptic Coatings specializes in bolt carrier groups and BCG coatings. With an ever-expanding product line, their BCGs and coatings offer reduced friction, longer lifespans, and increased performance, backed by their lifetime warranty.

This Bolt Carrier Group includes a MIL-SPEC 8620 aircraft quality steel carrier with a shot-peened carpenter no. 158 steel bolt. The DPMS cut carrier is compatible with most DPMS pattern AR’s on the market and features a shrouded firing pin, a chrome-lined interior, and a properly staked, chrome-lined gas key secured with grade 8 fasteners. The bolt assembly includes a tool steel extractor with spring and Viton O-ring. A chrome-finished firing pin is also included.

Cryptic BCGs are finished in one of six different coatings, each offering reduced friction, increased performance, and greater wear resistance than that of a standard bolt carrier group.

BSF 308 Barrel .308 Winchester Carbon Fiber 16 Inch Black

I have wanted a carbon fiber wrapped .308 barrel for quite some time, but three things have stopped me up until this point, necessity, price, and accuracy. For this build, the necessity comes from the desire to reduce weight, and the 16″ carbon fiber-wrapped, fluted barrel weighs nearly 25% percent less than my similar Criterion Hybrid .308 barrel. The price, well it is what it is. Regarding accuracy, some carbon fire barrels have a reputation for stringing when they get hot, BSF does not.

The .308 Winchester chambered 16 inch BSF Carbon Fiber Barrel appears to be the obvious choice for my new “CT Other Lightweight 308 AR build“. I’m looking forward to completing the build to see what this barrel can do.

Note: As I have mentioned repeatedly I like to support vendors who make good products and are responsive to customers. When I decided to order a barrel there was zero stock. I sent off an email to BSF and within hours I was able to claim the last .308 Winchester blank allotted to their next barrel run. True to their word forty days later I had my awesome carbon fiber wrapped barrel in hand. BSF is a great company to deal with, and they stand by their barrels.

Impressive Accuracy From a Lightweight, Futuristic Looking BSF 308 Barrel

BSF builds their .308 match-grade carbon fiber barrels with exceptional attention to detail that ensures you’ll achieve the best possible accuracy from your 308 AR-pattern rifle without getting a hernia lugging it around! BSF 308 barrels are turned from ordnance-grade 416R stainless steel, then given a roll-wrapped, tensioned, carbon fiber sleeve. The sleeve keeps weight down while providing excellent rigidity, coupled with enhanced cooling.

Why the sleeve method, rather than simple carbon fiber wrapping? The BSF folks believe wrapping traps heat and, as a result, is more likely to delaminate. Further, BSF uses a special carbon fiber that expands at the same rate as the 416R, and holes drilled into the jacket allow air to circulate around the barrel and vent heat quickly. Less heat distortion means far less risk of accuracy fade as your .308 Winchester chambered AR308 barrel heats up.

  • Fits .308 sized AR upper receiver
  • 5R button-rifled
  • 5/8″-24 TPI muzzle threads
  • .875″ O.D.
  • Barrel extension included
  • Requires RIFLE-length gas tube
  • Weight 28.4 ounces (16″ Fluted)
  • 11° Target Crown
  • DPMS Platform

BSF offers their .308 Winchester carbon fiber match barrels with a 1-10″ rifling twist effectively stabilizes that widest variety of popular bullet weights. And each barrel is thoroughly inspected by an experienced technician before leaving the BSF shop, ensuring you get a BSF 308 Barrel that’s as accurate as it is good looking!

From the Manufacturer

Current lead times on our barrels can be up to 12+ weeks. Some calibers will ship sooner than others but at this point, we are no longer guaranteeing that a barrel will be shipped by a certain date due to delays in materials for our production team and high volume of orders.

After turning down the barrel, we jacket a 416R Stainless steel match barrel in a roll-wrapped carbon fiber sleeve and load it under tension.  We use this jacketing method rather than wrapping the barrel in carbon fiber because this method of wrapping has been proven to trap heat and cause delamination.

The carbon fiber we use is specially designed to move at the same expansion rate as 416R stainless steel. We machine slots into the carbon fiber allowing air to move around the barrel and vent heat quicker without any delamination issues.  Using the Carbon Fiber this way keeps the rifling straighter the warmer the barrel gets because it’s under tension. This allows us to maintain superior stiffness and strength while keeping the barrel extremely lightweight.

Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous Safety Selector 45/90

The Radian Weapons Talon Ambidextrous safety selector is an easy way to make your AR-10 308 AR more user-friendly by allowing left and right-handed manipulations. It is important to be able to manipulate your rifle from multiple positions and this selector switch adds the ergonomics required to be able to do so. Machined from billet 7075-T6 aluminum, this safety selector can be changed between a 90° and 45° throw for faster operation.

The selector lever is easy to install with the spring-loaded retention spring that locks it in place without the need for screws. This ensures that it remains engaged and won’t come loose unless intended. The screw-less design reduces the risk of parts breakage so that your firearm is ready to be used at a moment’s notice. This simple addition will enhance any AR 308 by increasing ergonomics and usability for left-handed users.

Primary Weapons Ratcheting Castle Nut and End Plate: No More Staking

The Primary Weapons Systems Ratchet Lock Castle Nut and End Plate Set allows the armorer to attach either commercial type or Mil-Spec Buffer Tube to your AR-10 &and AR-15 based weapon without the pain-in-the-neck of staking. Yes, it’s secure, and guess what PWS created this option considering the possibility that you might want or need to change a buffer tube before your weapon deadline. You’re not married to the installation, and it won’t require you to destroy anything to get it apart. You might even do it without any colorful language.

The endplate includes an integrated QD mounting point for your sling swivel so you can get hooked up and get on with it. Is it a huge thing? That depends on how badly you need it today. Is it evolution? Definitely. Why do we need it? Because It’s Time, we stop suffering over the small stuff and evolve.
